Alan John Herbert

I’ve always had an interest in natural landscapes and architecture which is why the environments role has appealed to me. I also really enjoy problem solving and the variety that comes with being a generalist.

appreciate having to be very aware of my time management and how it can impact others. Having worked in teams of different sizes, I believe clear communication is extremely important and adaptability is essential when working both in and out a pipeline. I enjoy helping others but I’m also not afraid to ask for help when needed.

I also value time invested into personal projects at home. Here I get to experiment and try out artistic techniques or delve more into software troubleshooting in areas that might be outside of my normal work remit. I moved to Vancouver just over 3 years ago, it’s been a great experience so far.

I like how much nature there is to explore, plus the snowboard season is much better here than in England.

Over the last 10 years I have been scripting  in some form on and off in a variety of different software packages using python. I relish technical challenges and creative problem solving that comes with it.

I have written python tools for Maya, Nuke and Clarisse which have been used by other artists on a number of shows such as; Mission impossible 5, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, First Man and most recently Dune. One of the types of scripts that I have written has been to re-bake animation from one rig to another when keyframes have been set on the wrong controls. I’ve also developed an alembic converter that runs maya standalone through the command line. This was written towards the end of First Man when we were iterating our sculpts and the workflow from Zbrush to clarisse was painfully slow.
